Full Container Load

  • FCL stands for Full Container Load. it refers to a shipping arrangement where an entire shipping container is exclusively reserved for one shipment, typically belonging to asungle consignee. Tihs is in contrast to LCL (Less than Container Load), where multiple shipments from differet shippers are consolidated into a single container. FCL shipments are often used when the volume of goods to be transported is sufficient to fill a whole container.

How does FCL shipping work

  • BOOKING: The shipper (exporter) or freight forwarder makes a reservation with the shipping line to secure space on a vessel for the container.
  • CONTAINER LOADING: The shipper is responsible for packing and loading the goods into the container. It's crucial to ensure proper packaging and secure loading to prevent damage during transit.
  • TRANSPORTATION TO PORT: the loaded container is transported to the port of departure, usually by truck or raii, depending on the location of the shipper.
  • CUSTOMS CLEARANCE: Before departure, customs clearance procedures are completed. This involves ensuring that all necessary documentation is in order and that the goods comply with export regulations.
  • VESSEL LOADING: The container is delivered to the port and loaded onto the vessel. The shipping line takes over from this point, handling the ocean transportation.
  • OCEAN TRANSIT: The container is shipped to the destination port. The shipping line provides tracking information so the parties involved can monitor the progress of the shipment.
  • CUSTOMS CLEARANCE AT DESTINATION: Upon Arrival at the destination port, customs clearance procedures are carried out. This involves verifying documentation and compliance with import regulations.
  • DELIVERY TO CONSIGNEE: Once customs clearance is completed, the container is transported from the port to the consignee's (importer's) location for unloading.
